it depends on the animal concerned, usually when an orphaned animal is reared about humans it needs time to become wild again and learn to fend for itself, i know with foxes they keep them until they are about 4-5 months old then take them to what they call a holding pen, this is a big enclosure in a wooded area with nothing about, the babies can then get used to the noises about them a person comes just once a day to provide food and water but does not fuss the animals depending on how they react it could be a further 3-4 weeks in this pen then they open the doors and let the animals out but keep coming and putting down food it is only when the foxes stop coming back that they leave them to fend for their selves, so possibly by 6-8 months of age the foxes have gone and found a new wild life, they do the same sort of thing with most orphaned babies they look after them until they are weaned and when they would usually would leave their mums then move them to a wild setting and start limiting contact so they go wild and learn to not depend on humans and do things for them selves, they doors are opened and they have the choice to go free when the animal stops taking food they know the animal has found a new life, it is always done in a controlled manor and if the animal concerned does not show signs of fending for itself they will move them to a sanctuary with other wild creatures, in the hope they can learn to be a wild animal, hope this helps best of luck honey

depends.. every animal is different.. the age of the animal is important too and is it a herd animal or a solitary animal -
the main concern is will it be able to find food on its own
some animals are NEVER released and must live in zoos

Wildlife rehabilitation is the process of caring for orphaned, injured, sick or displaced wild animals Until they can be returned to the wild. Most states require a permit for any rehabilitates to take in animals also a permit. They do not turn these animals into pets all measures are used to minimize human contact as much as possible. These animals are held in captivity only till they are able to live independently in the wild. Fear of humans is necessary for all these animals to survive in the wild this is elaborate and time consuming process, this is so animals wont depend on humans and fear them as well so they have a better chance of survival in the wild.
Rehabilitates need to work with veterinarian’s to assess injures and diagnose a variety of illnesses these people need to know how to administer basic first aids and physical therapy extensive knowledge about each animals natural history, nutritional requirements, behavioral issues and caging consideration also need to be ware of any danger an animal may intend to inflict. Some wild animals that can not be rehablitated may be euthanized. (humanely). The release does depend on age of animal the illness or injury of such animal when it is brought into a center. And how fast this animal recovers from its illness or injury and get old enough to be released again to the wild. With so much land being distroyed the animals have to seek another area to live within this is moveing wild animals closer to humans and causing alot more animals to be orphaned, injured from alot of factors. Hear about animals in peoples yards pools trash etc.etc. in the news alot.
