sometimes it's dangerous to go 'cold turkey' from certain drugs (ie benzos) . in that case the patient will taper off use over a number of weeks. in other cases less harmful drugs are given as a substitute in declining strength.
you can be pretty sure it's a tough road after years of use.....good luck to your friend.

that would depend on the type of facility he went into, some places will not medicate you at all, others will get a doctor in to check you out and may give you something .. but obviously nothing strong to help with the cravings ...

having been to a detox myself for heroin, i given nothing and couldn't do it , so i went to a different detox centre and was offered valium to help with the withdrawals and this time i got through it .. and been clean 15 years ...

maybe ring and ask the place he is at the questions on how they detox clients, ask as if you were wanting to detox and they will give you their policy details on the detox.

I assume each facility takes a different approach. If he needs medication, I am assuming they would provide it. However, since they are detoxing off of drugs, chances are they will try to do it without substituting another drug in it's place.
