AD is a slow disease, starting with mild memory problems and ending with severe brain damage. The course the disease takes and how fast changes occur vary from person to person. On average, AD patients live from 8 to 10 years after they are diagnosed, though some people may live with AD for as many as 20 years.
Can’t remember.
Ive worked with people with Alzhiemers Dementia for 7years I dont think you can really put a time on it. Ive known people live with the disease until they have forgotten even how to walk talk. Yet have known people who have been diagnosed within a few months pass away but due to the likes of Pnuemonia or other illnesses,Ive never known of someone pass away specifically because of Alzhiemers.
If you are concerned because a family member or friend has been diagnosed you may be better speaking to their specialist.
I agree with Dr. L. Additionally, please be certain if it is, in fact, Alzheimer’s Disease. There are more than 60 conditions that can cause dementia. (4 major ones). The most important thing is to receive the correct diagnosis. There are different treatments and different outcomes based on the type of dementia. Has the person been diagnosed by a neurologist? I’m sorry for your situation. It will not be an easy road.
try the Alzheimer’s uk pages. I was certainly of the impression that Alzheimer’s rarely kills in itself but that it makes people more vulnerable to other things such as pneumonia, or that loss of balance leads to a fall and fracture which complicates and thus leads to premature death etc. So that it is very often the precursor and contributory to death but not the actual cause.
My Mum was diagnosed about 2yrs ago and I’ve read up quite a lot since.
