Physiotherapy?

Where do you intend to pursue your physiotherapy degree? Most physiotherapy degrees are 4-year full-time programs; most UK physiotherapy degree program are completed in 3 years full-time.

During the first year, you will be receiving instructions in the basic medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, introductory psychology and sociology, etc). You may also be taking introductory physiotherapy courses/modules such as movement science or kinesiology, motor control and learning, and exercise physiology. Laboratory work is expected. There is usually a clinical placement that serves as an observation unit where you rotate to various physiotherapy practices/disciplines under the supervision of a physiotherapist. You may be given permission to perform patient history/interview and basic physical examination during this placement.

Year 2 to year 3 and/or 4 , you’ll be gradually exposed to the knowledge and skills of physiotherapy starting with electrophysical agents, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, and cardiopulmonary physiotherapy. Pediatric and geriatric physical therapy will be included. You will attend lectures and practial laboratories for each of these areas. Expect to practice and to be practiced. You’ll get used to dressing down with your classmates and instructors during labs; guys in shorts and girls in shorts and sports bra. Expect written assignments, examinations and practical examinations as modes of assessment.

You will also take courses/modules in research methods and statistics, health promotion and disease prevention, healthcare ethics, and health policy and management.

Clinical placements will be arranged with the year 2 to 3 and/or 4 curriculum for you to apply what you learned in school. A research project or thesis may be required as a final year project depending on your school’s curriculum.

The goal of the physiotherapy degree program is to prepare you to function as a competent clinician when you graduate.

It’s not easy and is comparable to a medical degree program. You will spend time outside of course schedule to practice with your classmates. There are a lot to learn theoretically and a lot of examination and treatment techniques to learn and you need time to practice them. In fact, in Australia it is actually harder to get admitted to a physiotherapy degree program than to a medical degree program due to the increasing occupational prestige of physiotherapy and popularity.
